Daifuku, Cellumation develop compact robotic depalletization cell

Daifuku Intralogistics America Corporation announced it developed a new robotic depalletization cell. The company said it developed the system at its Bolingbrook Innovation Center with the help of its partner Cellumation.

The new robotic depalletization cell leverages Cellumation’s Celluveyor technology, which combines modular hexagonal cells, cutting-edge vision systems, and intelligent software to optimize material handling. Unlike traditional depalletization systems that require significant floor space, this compact system operates with exceptional space efficiency, Daifuku said.

It’s important to note that the 3×3 square meter footprint refers specifically to the Celluveyor descrambler within the overall robotic depalletization and case singulation system. While the Celluveyor fits within this compact space, the complete robotic depalletization cell, including all robotic components, requires additional space.

However, the system’s Celluveyor design allows for adaptable layouts. This ensures businesses can achieve greater flexibility while reducing operational complexity.

The Bolingbrook, Ill.-based company is a global designer, manufacturer, installer, and service provider of integrated material handling systems. Its customers include Crate&Barrel, Converse, Skechers, Blue Bell Ice Cream, Scholastic, and Gildan. Its product portfolio includes automated guided vehicles (AGVs), automated storage & retrieval systems (ASRS), conveyors, picking robots, sortation robots, and software.

Late last year, the company unveiled its AS-35 Shoe Sorter, the next generation of its sortation technology. Built on the foundation of its sliding shoe-sorter design, the company claimed that the AS-35 delivers high speed, reliability, and innovation.

Key features in the system

Daifuku said the depalletizer’s key features include:

  • Compact Footprint: Utilizing Celluveyor’s 3×3 square meter operating space for descrambling, the robotic depalletizing system achieves significant space savings compared to conventional depalletizing and descrambling systems.
  • High Throughput: Capable of handling up to 450 layers per hour or 5,200 packages per hour, ensuring operational efficiency at scale.
  • Flexible Outputs: Supports a wide range of packaging types and configurations to meet the needs of diverse industries.
  • Advanced Integration: Daifuku offers comprehensive warehouse integration solutions, with advanced metrics available as an optional feature.
  • Process Reliability: Equipped with robust pallet depalletizing technology and an intelligent vision system to ensure accurate, collision-free layer descrambling (singulation).

Daifuku plans to debut the system at ProMat 2025, taking place from March 17–20, 2025, at McCormick Place in Chicago. Attendees visiting Booth S3841 will have the opportunity to explore Daifuku’s latest innovations, including the robotic depalletization cell and other advanced solutions.

In addition to the booth, Daifuku said it will offer daily shuttle service from McCormick Place to the Bolingbrook Innovation Center. There, visitors can experience live demonstrations of the robotic depalletization cell and other state-of-the-art technologies. These include robotic depalletization, high-speed sortation, shuttle ASRS systems, AGVs, conveyor products, and dynamics and emulation software.
