AutoStore signs framework to supply Amazon with its technology

AutoStore AS today said it has entered into an agreement with Amazon.com Inc. to supply automated storage and retrieval systems, or ASRS, to the e-commerce provider on a global basis.

While the framework defined the terms for further procurement of AutoStore robotics and systems by Amazon, it does not contain any purchasing commitments at this time.

 

More about Amazon’s use of robotics

Amazon now has more than 1 million robots operating in its fulfillment centers, helping with stowing, picking, sorting, and intra-facility transport. Many of those robots are developed by the company itself. Since it acquired Kiva Systems, an automated guided vehicle (AGV) maker in 2012, Amazon has continued to invest in more robotics.

This includes its Proteus autonomous mobile robot (AMR), which it unveiled in 2022. The AMR can move carsts weighing nearly 400 kg (881.8 lb.) and relieve associates of strenuous tasks so they could focus on higher-skilled work such as managing inventory flow and ensuring quality control.

Amazon has also deployed manipulation robots to move packages in its facilities. For example, its STARK robot uses a FANUC CRX-30iA force- and power-limited arm to pick heavy totes from conveyors and place them on carts.

The company also created Vulcan, which Amazon described as its “first robotic system with a sense of touch.” It can see and feel objects simultaneously to navigate densely packed environments. Both STARK and Vulcan will boost employee productivity and customer service, said Amazon.

The company is also acquiring more robotics companies. In May, Amazon acquired RIVR, a developer of quadruped wheeled robots for doorstep delivery.

To manage all of these robots, Amazon created DeepFleet. Amazon said DeepFleet will improve the travel times of its robotic fleet by 10% and enable it to deliver packages to customers faster and at lower cost.

AutoStore expands global footprint

Nedre Vats, Norway-based AutoStore combines automation, software, and AI to enable intelligent fulfillment across the entire lifecycle.

Its ASRS is powered by CubeVerse, the company‘s software foundation that connects initial design, simulation, operations, and predictive diagnosis. Built into CubeVerse, AutoStore Intelligence uses 15 TB of operational and simulation data to optimize performance and predict issues before they disrupt operations.

AutoStore operates more than 1,950 systems in over 65 countries. Earlier this year, the company gave a look at its expanded operations in Australia and New Zealand. It now supports more than 30 systems in Australia and New Zealand, including IKEA Sylvia Park’s in-store AutoStore system in Auckland.
